Helen and Brian Young

We met Brian and Helen way back in 1968, on a ship bound from England to Australia, via the Cape of Good Hope (the Suez Canal was still blocked then after the Six Day War). In those days, it was far cheaper to travel by sea than by air. As I recall, Helen boarded the ship in the Canary Islands. The two later married in Australia. All very romantic!
They bought a lovely old colonial house in Linley Point and I painted this double portrait in the Wuthering Heights mode to make it appropriate for the venue. The background was inspired by an enclosed garden in Pimlico. It was a garden I often frequented as I lived just around the corner from it for several years. Although it was a private garden, owned by the residents of the Square, a bunch of rebel Irish gardeners always let me in to draw and paint there. |
