In 1960, I spent a year living on a 28 foot sailing boat in Auckland Harbour, learning how to sail. (Auckland is on the North Island.)

At the end of that year, five Kiwi blokes and I entered our 28 foot ketch in the very last Trans Tasman Yatch Race. I was the navigator, after learning ocean navigation in three days from an old salt. We came last, but we had a lot of fun on the way, meeting up with a nasty storm and sailing right through an inquisitive school of whales. I was a good navigator... we just had a really slow boat!
