This is the Papal Palace in Avignon. It is one of the largest Gothic structures in Europe.
It became the residence of the Popes in 1309 when Pope Clement V fled the chaos in Rome after his election. Later, Avignon was the home of the two "Anti-Popes", Clement VII and Benedict XIII. |
