This is the Papal Palace in Avignon. It is one of the largest Gothic structures in Europe.

It became the residence of the Popes in 1309 when Pope Clement V fled the chaos in Rome after his election. Later, Avignon was the home of the two "Anti-Popes", Clement VII and Benedict XIII.

This juicy bas-relief caught my eye. Love that dragon! Straight from the Game of Thrones.

The River Rhone is divided here by a large group of islands. The Rhone becomes a single flow just beyond Avignon,
