Verona
In April/May, 2014, I spent about 5 weeks exploring the Northern part of Italy. I stayed in six cities: Milan, Turin, Genoa, Florence, Padua and Verona. From those cities I was able to do day trips to a variety of locations, like Venice, the Cinque Terre, Siena, Pisa, Lago di Garda, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore.

Piazza Erbe in Verona.

The last time I visited Verona was in a previous century. I enjoyed my five night stay here in 2014, and explored the city more fully. This page is devoted solely to Verona.

Two arches in the ancient defensive walls of Verona lead to Piazza Bra, which contains the Roman Arena.

The River Adige flows swiftly around three sides of the old part of Verona, where most of the architectural treasures of the city reside.
I think the sign indicates that this charming facade belongs to the Austrian Consulate.
Apparently, Verona's Roman Arena is the 3rd largest of its kind in Italy. It is often used for musical events.

Only a small section remains of the outer perimeter walls. Most of the Roman sites have had their stones taken away and reused for new building projects over the centuries. We are lucky to still have this arena today!

Much of the Roman past still exists about 6 metres below the surface of Modern Verona.

The Cathedral of Verona
The Lower Church in the Cathedral of Verona. Several of the major Churches here have upper and lower chambers. The lower levels tend to house the more ancient places of worship.

Note the large baptismal font in the centre.

The entrance to the Castel Vecchia. It has a charming museum which certainly deserves a visit.

A marvellous example of Gothic art by Stephano Di Giovanni in Castel Vecchio.
The Church of San Fermo.
The Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore.
The Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore. San Zeno is the patron saint of Verona.

Note the three arches in the centre which lead to the lower church.

The Palazzo Della Ragione (or Palazzo del Comune) was once the City Hall and it also housed the Magistrate's Court.
