Plaza Mayor is a friendly, large square in the very heart of Old Madrid. It is easy to walk around and to explore the Old Town. There are delightful aspects at every turn.
If you walk up the stairs through the arch on the right of the photo, you will arrive at Plaza Mayor. There are no shortage of cafes and restaurants in Madrid.
Spaniards love their parks. This is the Parque del Buen Retiro (sometimes just called the Retiro). It stretches all the way from the vicinity of the Prado to the Atocha Railway Station.
A group of Flamenco buskers in the Retiro.
This painting by Giovanni Bellini is in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, which is near the Prado. The Thyssen Museum has an excellent and extensive collection of fine art. Definitely not to be missed. Alas, I can't show any works from the Prado as one is not allowed to take pictures in that museum.
A gorgeous self portrait of the Young Rembrandt, also at the Thyssen Museum.
This is the Almudena Cathedral... or, to give it's full name: the Santa Maria la Real de La Almudena. It is a Neo-Gothic structure which was begun in 1879 and was only completed in 1993. This accounts for the modern decorations throughout the building.

The Royal Palace of Madrid.
The soap bubbles come in all sizes and shapes. The kids have fun trying to pop them.
Public transport in Madrid is well organised and quite inexpensive. There is an extensive and efficient Metro system connecting all parts of the city, and buses seem to run frequently.
One of the pleasant features of Spanish life is the insitution of the Tapas. When you find an appropriate bar or cafe, a glass of wine or a beer may also come with a special dish of some local delicacy. For a small sum, you can add a few extra Tapas dishes to your order. I found that three dishes were more than adequate for my lunches.
This is the Parque del Oeste, which is close to the river. In one corner of the park you can find the cable car, or Teleferico, to the Casa de Campo.
