From Riga I caught a bus to Sigulda. It is about 53 kilometres East of the Capital of Latvia. The Gauja National Park is close by.
I am not certain but I think the building above is a 19th Century castle which is now used as the Sigulda Town Council. |

Walking towards the National Park, we come to this Lutheran Church beside a lake.
The austere but attractive interior of the Lutheran Church.
Sigulda Old Castle. It is fairly close to the Lutheran Church seen earlier.
We cross the Gauja River on our way to Turaida.
This is the exterior of a cave in a limestone cliff, which we pass along the river bed.
Over the past few centuries, people have carved graffiti into the cave walls. |

We catch a glimpse of Turaida Castle as we slowly make our way up a steep road.
Turaida Castle is part of a large Park complex which includes this Lutheran Church.

Turaida Castle. Work continues to restore this old edifice.
These are stills from a video shown within the Castle. It gives us an idea of what Turaida Castle may have looked like in the past.
A view from the tower of the Castle.
It was a two and a half hour journey from Riga to Sigulda, but well worth it. I caught a bus there and the train back to Riga.
